Happy Weekend

If you're on the East Coast I hope you are enjoying all the snow.  Also how is it almost February! Where did January go?  I'm hoping this winter weather can disappear as quickly(one snow storm and I'm over it).  Also yes I know it's a Thursday so it seems a bit early to say happy weekend, but I have no classes for the rest of the week, so for me this is the start of my weekend (though in all actuality Tuesday was the start since I had half of my classes canceled this week due to weather conditions).

Here is a winter weekend pick-me up:

1. Lilly Pulitzer new arrivals came out (and are making me crave warm weather)
2. Patagonia is having a 30% off sale (including lots of winter wear)
3. Jack Rogers is also having a sale with an additional 10% off with code Winter15
4. Up to 40% off at J.Crew Factory no code needed

East Coast Super Storm 2015 Survival Guide

For all my friends back on the west coast sending me snapchats at the beach............... It's 16 degrees here in Boston and I haven't left my building in over 24 hours.

Though for the record I do think the news and media overhyped "Super Storm Juno".  Yes we got a lot of snow, but living in a city I really did not feel that I was in any danger.  That said here is what I did to "survive" the snowstorm

I drank coffee (praise that Dunkin Donuts was open on campus)

I watched plenty of netflix (marathon of gossip girl please!)

I did my homework

plenty of tumblr

And I splet.

Favorite Fashion Instagrams

After creating my new Instagram account (if you haven't checked it out make sure to! @claireelise5) I've been obsessed with following all of my favorite fashion companies.  Following these accounts are a great way for me to get inspiration, and a peek into the world of some of my favorite stores, designers, and magazines.  Here are my favorites that I've found:

Weekend Eats

For the record lying in your bed all day makes you VERY hungry.  I've had limited access to food, this combined with the internet (specifically tumblr) has helped me find recipes that once I can stand in my kitchen (and go buy food) I've decided I'm going to try to make.

2. Extra Cheesy Breakfast Pitas with Bacon and Avocado (literally all of my favorite things in one recipe)

It's Friday!

My last first week of college has officially ended, and I unfortunately spent 75% of the the week lying in bed.  Why you ask?  Cause ha home girl injured herself on bid day... Yes my life is that sad.  Regardless I have spent plenty of time watching Netflix and catching up on all the sleep I missed during recruitment.  Here is some fun stuff that will hopefully get me through the weekend:

1. 30% off J.Crew Factory new arrivals
2. Up to 75% off at Loft
3. These new arrivals from Red Dress Boutique (which are making me excited for warm weather)

My last recruitment

I still can't believe that my last recruitment is over!  The past week has gone by in a blur of cheering and excitement.  As I've mentioned before this recruitment I was participating as a member of the recruitment team for panhellenic so I was completely disaffiliated from my chapter.  This means I haven't been able to wear letters since last September!  But it was all worth it to help some 400+ girls find the homes!  I truly love recruitment, and while I missed being able to spend my last recruitment with my chapter I had an amazing time on the other side!  Here are some photos from the past few days

Finally a panorama from Bid Day!

It was so cool to watch all the excited girls run to their chapters!  Of course after our Pi Chi/Panhel reveal in typical me fashion I injure myself running back to my chapter.  So I spent my last bid day in the hospital!  Certainly a night to remember.  I hope that everyone else who has finished their recruitment had a great time and ended up in the perfect home!

City Style

Moving to the east coast I definitely confused many people when I said I loved going "into the city", not realizing that while I grew up with "the city" meaning San Francisco, everyone from the Northeast thought I meant New York.  Regardless taking trips into San Francisco is one of my favorite things to do when I come home over break.  Here is the outfit I wore last weekend when I ventured in with my friends.  This day we had lunch at the Ferry Building then walked up to Union Square and did a little shopping.

Update: My New Years resolution to "shop my closet" is going well.  I've been out on four shopping ventures since the new year and I haven't purchased anything.  I'll say I'm very proud of myself!

Shirt: Banana Republic (old)
Jacket: Banana Republic (old)
Pants: Zella Leggings (c/o Nordstroms)
Necklace: Baublebar (I'm obsessed)

Hope Everyone's week is off to a good start!

Happy Sunday!

Happy Sunday everyone!  It's my last weekend in California, and I spent it with family out and about.  Here are some of the fun things that I've noticed this weekend:

1. Pantone's color of the year: Marsala.  Now while I've never taken much notice of the "color of the year" Sephora does have a nice lip set all in variations of this shade.  If you are looking for reddish brown tones definitely check this set out. Sephora has a whole line of Pantone color of the year palettes as well including a cheek and eye palette.  In case you are wondering this is what the color Marsala looks like:

2. Golden Globes are tonight.  Who else is ready to check out Tina Fey and Amy Pohler (who I know will kill it as always).  I love award shows, and the Golden Globes are no exception.

3. If y'all haven't noticed I have recently become obsessed with Baublebar.  I can't help it they have such cute jewelry, and the prices are not bad.  Check out my instagram (@claireelise5) to see how I've been styling my new necklaces recently.

4. And what would a weekend be without Sales?

Fashion Favorite: Splendid Tee

I have very few favorite T-Shirts but this one from Splendid is my all-time favorite!  It's made of the absolute softest material, and it is perfect to wear for class, running errands, or a casual lunch/brunch.  I love Splendid because every item of clothing I have purchased from them is of top quality in addition to being extremely comfy.  I styled it today to go out shopping, and in addition I'm wearing my new favorite bangle I received from the Lilly Pulitzer sale.

Shirt: Splendid (old but similar here)
Pants: J.Crew
Coat: Burberry
Scarf: Somewhere in Scotland (and I literally mean a random shop in the highlands)
Necklaces : Baublebar (here and here)
Bracelets: Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer (no longer availible), Buddy and Dash on Etsy

Winter Essentials

Even though my home state of California is currently experiencing record highs (it's going to be in the mid 60's all weekend!) in roughly 4 days I will be returning to Boston for my last semester at college (*cue panic mode*).  In Boston winters are rough to say the least, and as a native Californian I still do not know how I've lasted for 3 years.  I've put together two photo sets to show you how and what I wear during the winter.  The first set shows my winter essentials, the clothing I recommend having if you will be in Boston from January-March.  The second is 4 "go-to" outfits I wear to class during the winter.  One problem I've found in Boston is that while it may be 0-14 degrees Fahrenheit outside it will be 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit indoors, so be prepared to layer a bit.

Pictured above:
Sweaters from J.Crew (here, and here) and Gap (similar here)
Shirts from J.Crew (factory versions here and here) and Vineyard Vines Shep Shirt (here)
Pants from J.Crew (here) and Nordstroms (here)
Shoes from Hunter (via Nordstroms here) LL Bean (on backorder here or similar here) Sam Edleman (here), Frye (on sale here!) and Sorel - (I do not actually have Sorels, but I have heard wonderful things) (here
Socks: J.Crew (here [these are one of my favorites!!])
Outerwear: From Patagonia (here, here, and here [I recommend this one in particular if you live in an area that gets very cold, it is expensive but SO WORTH IT!]) Ralph Lauren (here and on sale!) Burberry (here, cheaper version here, here, and here)
Scarves: From J.Crew (similar here and here) ASOS (here
Ray-Ban Sunglasses: Via Nordstroms here
Gloves: J.Crew (here) and Ralph Lauren (via Macy's here and on sale!)
Bag: Longchamp (here

Nordstroms Designer Sale

My family recently got Nordstrom Notes (part of the Nordstrom Card Rewards program) so I wandered over to their sight to browse and see if I could find anything that caught my eye.  I did not know I would stumble right into their designer sale.  While designer clothing on sale is usually still more expensive than I can justify, this time was different.  With items up to 65% off there was lots of designer buys under $300 (which for many of these brands is a steal)!  I've linked below some of my favorites, but make sure you don't miss out.  Thankfully they were sold out of the Prada booties in my size otherwise I know where all my Christmas money would have gone.

Caught my Eye!

2014 has already been an exciting year and it has only been a week!  Here are some fun links that have caught my eye in the past few days

1. This adorable video of young boys restoring my faith in future humanity

2. Lilly Pulitzer and Target are collaborating!
Yes you heard correctly, one of my favorite brands will be working with Target starting this April to sell special prints and items (some household!!!! Yay for apartment decorating!).  Here is a more in depth article and make sure to check out the instagram account lillyfortarget, where they have already started showing some prints and items that may be featured.  Needless to say I am excited to see what they have in store for us!

3. For those of you who are addicted to TV like me (stuck in Shondaland for life) here is a list of all the 2015 TV spring premiere dates

Sorority Recruitment: Tips from a sister

This post is full of tips that I wish I had know before going through recruitment.  This will be my last recruitment, and after this year I will have seen recruitment from 3 different perspectives: Potential New Member (or PNM), sister, and recruitment team (Panhellenic).  I have recruited 2 times for my chapter, and have learned so much throughout the process.  So here are my tips:

To maximize your options as a PNM you want to make sure at every party you put your best self forward!  You will be talking with many sorority women, often for five minutes.  They will be making snap impressions of you so you want that impression to be positive.  To do so make sure you:

  • Get sleep and stay energized!  You don't want to burnout at the end of the day and the women you meet at the last party think you are bored talking to them.
  • Keep the conversation light and fun!  Talk about your family, philanthropy/causes that matter to you, friends, travel, organizations you have participated in in High School or gotten involved in at college, what you did over winter break, future goals and why they matter.  These all are great topics to discuss!
  • Don't be afraid to drive the conversation a bit.  Honestly (especially at the end of the day) the sister will be happy to have a break from talking.  Plus recruitment is all about learning about YOU! The sister you are meeting wants to hear about your life.  Though make sure to not have a Paris Geller Harvard interview moment (if you've never seen Gilmore Girls Paris wouldn't let her interviewer say a single word- Don't do that!).
  • Avoid talking about controversial topics like politics and religion (unless it feels right), but remember that you will be talking with a variety of women from different backgrounds.  You do not want to say something that could potentially offend her (thus making that her impression of you).  Further avoid talking about fraternity men and alcohol.  Recruitment is about learning about you, not how hard you party.
  • Show interest in the chapters and the women!  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  My favorite questions to get as a sister are "What makes your chapter unique on campus?", "what is your favorite part about being a sister in XXX?" and "What convinced you to join XXX?".  Make sure you have enough information about all the chapters to make the most informed decision.
  • Take Notes.  All the chapters will blend together after awhile (especially if like my school there are 10+ chapters on campus).
Keep your mind open!!  I cannot stress this enough.  You are making this decision for yourself.  Not a family member, a friend, or society.  Most girls go into recruitment with somewhat of an idea of the reputations of various chapters on campus.  Forget those and focus on the conversations and the women you meet!

Clothing
In terms of outfits I'll say this: make sure the outfits you chose are appropriate for both your age and the occasion.  You are not dressing for boys so leave the short skirt and low cut dresses at home.   Further pick outfits you feel confident and comfortable in! Some basic ideas for each day:

Casual: Keep it simple, a sweater or button-up, jeans or nice pants, and boots.  If you feel inclined maybe add a blazer to amp up the outfit!
Business Casual: LBD, Skirt, nice shirt (not low cut), blazer, if you go the pants route make sure they are very nice slacks, heels or nice flats
Preference: Nice cocktail style dress.  Something young yet classy.  Add jewelry for added bling and heels or nice flats

Final Thoughts: DO NOT take recruitment to seriously.  Yes I did just say that.  Getting let go from chapters is not the end of the world.  It does not say anything about your character or personality.  From the sister side selection is complicated and often not the most fair.  We talk with you ladies for such a short period of time that often it can be hard to get the best impression.  This is why it is important to make these impressions count!

If you have any questions feel free to ask me on either tumblr or over email, I'm always here to help!  If you need someone to vent to during recruitment feel free to reach out for an unbiased audience!

Best of luck to all, and just know it all works out in the end!  Going Greek was the best decision I ever made!

Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale

As many of you are all well aware this morning was the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale.  Yes I woke up at 5 am for this, but I did manage to score some great finds (before the sight crashed!)  Here are my purchases from this morning! Since all my items sold out I cant link them, but if you have any questions about styles or print names feel free to ask!

I hope everyone had a good morning, and scored some great pieces!

Getting Edgy

If you know me well then you'll know this new necklace I got from Baublebar is quite edgy for my style.  I couldn't help it though, the minute I saw this necklace I fell in love, thought about it for three days straight then caved and ordered it!  It arrived yesterday and I just couldn't wait to style it.  It added the perfect amount of shine to my outfit today (and total side note the teal shirt I'm wearing from J. Crew Factory is the absolute softest I own!)

Necklace: Baublebar (plus Baublebar is having 70% off certain items!)
Shirt: J.Crew Factory (also having a 40% off Clear the clearance)
Leggings: Lululemon
